THRESHOLDS

THRESHOLDS is a year of personal enquiry, with the figure as its whole subject. Often these are wide-eyed proto-humans, still part of nature or perhaps of a mythological past. Sometimes they are just figures, quietly defiant and contemplative.

The process has been to work small, find something in a sketch that is hard to name and easy to lose, then see how much of it survives the move to a large canvas.

That has changed the surface itself. What began as a window to look through has become something closer to an object, framed and aged on purpose so that it reads as a living surface you want to put a hand on rather than see past.
